Essential oil companies such as Camden Grey of Miami, ship their essential oils in opaque plastic bottles instead of brown glass bottles. Plastic bottles are lighter in weight, resulting in lower shipping costs. Plastic also costs less than glass, helping to lower your overall costs. Unfortunately, plastic bottles tend to warp and lose their shape over time. It is best to store your essential oils in brown glass bottles to preserve their shelf life. Light is the enemy of any essential oil.

Bottles

It breaks down the oils and shortens shelf life. By using brown glass you keep the light out. Ask your soap supply company how they ship their essential oils. Do they use plastic or brown glass bottles? If they ship using plastic bottles, consider purchasing a few empty 16 oz brown glass bottles with your order. I do this when I order from Camden Grey. Make sure the brown glass bottles you order are large enough to hold all of the essential oils that you purchase. For example, if you purchase 2 lbs of lavender essential oil, then you need to purchase two empty 16 oz brown glass bottles. A 16 oz bottle is easier to handle and pour than a 32 oz bottle. However, if you purchase 5 lbs of lavender essential oil, you will want to purchase two 32 oz bottles and one 16 oz bottle. The large 32 oz bottles are great for long term storage and the 16 oz bottle can be used for your natural soap making. Brown glass bottles are reusable so you can use them for many years. Essential oil suppliers such as Wholesale Supplies Plus ship their product in brown glass bottles. Although their prices may be a little higher, you can use the bottles over and over again. When you do reuse a bottle with a different scent, be sure to give the inside of the bottle a good washing. You don’t want your lemongrass essential oil to smell like spearmint.

Essential oils are what give natural soap their enjoyable smells, filling the air about you with their scents and your senses with their wonder.

There are a wide variety of essential oils offered by soap supply companies and trying to decide on which ones to purchase can be difficult. The scent classes are woody, evergreen, green, floral, herbal and citrus. To help in your decision making think about which scents you prefer. If you like herbal scents you can choose rosemary, dill, or perhaps clary sage. If citrus scents are more your style you could select grapefruit, bergamot or even lime. Now, with a few essential oils added to your spread sheet, try to imagine how they would smell if you were to blend two or more together. Creating blends of essential oils is considered an art form. I am sure that some of the most interesting and popular blended scents were created due to experimentation, or even by accident. As a beginner don’t be afraid to go with your first instinct on what you think would make a great essential oil blend. Citrus essential oils, such as lemon or verbena, have a soft, light smell. It is important to note that these types of essential oils tend to disappear and float away in natural soaps after only a few weeks. Furthermore, strong, heavy smells such as clove or cedarwood stick around for a long, long time, so when blending, take these properties into consideration. Match a soft light oil with a strong heavy oil. You will only need to use a small amount of the strong scented oils in your blend. Also, you can help preserve the wonderful scent of your natural soap by putting them in shrink wrap. This will help your natural soap retain their fragrance for many months.

Here is a natural soap recipe for one of my favorite essential oil blends. I call this blend Citrus Splash.

The first step in purchasing essential oils for natural soap making is to find an essential oil supplier. The best way to do this is to do a google search on “essential oils”. You will receive a results page of several soap making supply companies from all across the US or your country. One strategy I employ when making my soap supply purchases is to find a company that is located close to where I live, preferably in my state. I live in Florida so I would do a Google search such as “essential oils florida”. Then I look through the list to see if there are any suppliers in Florida that are in or near my town. The advantage to purchasing supplies from a supplier close to your location is two-fold. You will receive your purchases quicker and the shipping costs will be lower. There are also the added benefits of knowing that you are helping your local economy by purchasing from a local vendor and a shorter shipping distance mean less fossil fuels are burned in getting your product to you.

The second step in purchasing essential oils is to compare soap supply costs from two or more suppliers. To do this go to Google docs and create a spread sheet called “Essential Oils Costs”. You will need a Google account to sign into Google docs in order to create a new spread sheet. Creating a Google account and using Google docs is free Soap Stacksand your spread sheet can easily be shared with friends or neighbors. See Google docs for more help creating accounts and spread sheets. You can also use another spread sheet application such as Microsoft Excel if you prefer.

With your new Google docs spread sheet created, start listing the essential oils you are interested in purchasing. I like to compare the prices of essential oils I purchase from two companies so I will have two sets of columns, one set for each company. By listing all the essential oils with their prices in this manner, you are better able to see if one company’s prices are far greater that the other. Certain times of the year the prices of a particular essential oil, for example, Patchouli, can go sky high. One soap supply company may have the sky high price while the other company may have the lower price. Add up all the prices to get the total costs for each company. If the prices are comparable then I will purchase all my essential oils from just one company. But sometimes I divide my purchases between the two companies if certain essential oils have sky high prices that I want to avoid. Be aware that purchasing from two different companies will double your shipping costs, so it is important to determine if your savings will be significant.
